The Nutcracker, presented each December, provides an opportunity for our cast of approximately 60 local students and community members to bring this classic holiday performance to our local community. Guest artists (principals with national ballet companies) are brought in to enhance the level of the performance and provide an opportunity for our local students to learn from professional dancers. FCPA, in collaboration with Foothills Dance Conservatory, first brought the Nutcracker to the Seneca area in 2002 and began performing this wonderful ballet at the Clemson University Brooks Center of the Performing Arts in 2003. This year we are celebrating our 22nd year of this performance!

The development of The Nutcracker ballet was first proposed by Ivan Alexandrovitch Vsevolojsky, who was the director of Imperial Theatres in Russia. He suggested to choreographer Marius Petipa and composer Piotr Ilyitch Tchaikovsky that their newest ballet be based on the story The Nutcracker and the King of Mice, written by E.T.A. Hoffman. At first, Petipa and Tchaikovsky refused Vsevolojsky’s proposal, but after some revision to the story, the men agreed, and work began. The premier of the ballet was December 17, 1892, and although the Czar was thrilled, critics were displeased. Today, however, Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker music is the most renowned Christmas music in the world. Although not quite the same, versions of Petipa’s choreography for the Grand pas de Deux is still used today.
Foothills Dance Conservatory with support from the Foothills Conservatory for the Performing Arts continues the tradition of performing the Nutcracker every year since 2002. Our story closely follows the original plot with a contemporary twist in the beginning of Act I. There is a Christmas party at young Clara’s home in Germany. Her parents have decorated a grand Christmas tree and have invited all of their neighbors and friends. The party is enhanced by the arrival of Godfather Drosselmeyer who has brought toys and gifts for all of the children. Clara is given a nutcracker. Later she falls asleep, and in her dream her beloved nutcracker defeats the Mouse King and turns into a handsome Prince. Clara encounters many delightful characters that dazzle and entertain her as she sits next to her Prince. The Sugar Plum Fairy and the Cavalier direct the festivities in honor of Clara and the Prince. The story of The Nutcracker reminds us about the true happiness this season brings. We hope you enjoy the show!
